version 1.30
written by Gary Calpo - flipino@visi.net

[1.1 > Introduction]
"640K should be enough for anybody." -Bill Gates, 1981
Sure, it was 15 years ago, but even to this day "16MB should be
enough for anybody" doesn't really hold true. When Windows95
runs out of memory, it makes more memory out of space on your
hard drive. Until recently, it was hard to tell just how much
it was using because that would require a peek into C:\WINDOWS
and a look at the WIN386.SWP file. That's where SwapMon comes in.
With SwapMon, you will be able to make highly educated decisions
on how much memory you should upgrade to saving you time and
well earned money.
[1.2 > What's New]
1.30 - Totally bypasses looking at the filesize of WIN386.SWP,
and instead uses Win32 API calls to scan the true amount
of memory being swapped to and from the hard drive.
Note: Your readings should drop significantly. Windows
seems to allot a huge block of memory even when
using just a small portion of it.
1.21 - Fixed a bug which prevented swapfiles in your root
directory from registering with the monitor.
1.20 - The program now optionally minimizes to an icon in your
System Tray. Also redesigned the interface a little and
added a Reset function.
1.10 - Made better use of the space that the program took in the
Start Bar by adding a scrolling marquee display option.
1.00 - The official version implements a state-memory system. It
basically remembers the last state of the SwapMon window
which means if you quit the program minimized, it will
reload minimized.
[2.1 > Distribution Contents]
The official distribution of Swapmon, SWAPMON.ZIP should contain
only the following contents.
SWAPMON.EXE, the executable.
SWAPMON.TXT, the documentation.
FILEID.DIZ, for the BBS people.
[2.2 > Program Requirements]
1. Windows 95. It just might help.
2. Visual Basic 4 Runtimes. You can get these from
http://members.visi.net/~flipino/progs.html
[2.3 > Usage]
2.3.1 - First Contact
When you first run the program, it should send you to the
setup dialog box. From here, you can control where the
program minimizes to and also how it uses the window
caption in displaying information.
2.3.2 - The SwapMon Window
Somewhat self-explanatory...
* Minimum Size - This is the smallest swapfile usage size
detected by SwapMon for that current
session.
* Maximum Size - This is the largest swapfile usage size
detected by SwapMon for that current
session.
* Record Minimum Size - This is the smallest swapfile
usage size for all the sessions
since installing the program
or the last Reset.
* Record Maximum Size - This is the largest swapfile
usage size for all the sessions
since installing the program
or the last Reset.
... hey I told you it was gonna be self-explanatory.
To access the Setup, Reset, and About buttons, just click
on the Window and it should slide out from under. Pretty
cool, huh?
2.3.3 - Troubleshooting
Hm, not much to say here, but if you ever have any problems,
it helps to delete the INI and do the Setup process again.
Hopefully, you won't have to resort to this. Don't forget
to eMail me about it.
[3.1 > Looking Ahead]
In the future I hope to be able to poke more into the swap file
and find out how much of it is actually being used. Look for
more comprehensive information, also.
[3.2 > Distribution]
Please feel free to distribute this program wherever you wish.
However, you must preserve the contents of this package and not
disturb any of the data contained within. Doing so is a violation
of United States and international law. Violators can and will
be prosecuted. Have a nice day =)
[3.3 > Downloading]
At present, the current location to download the latest version of
SwapMon is off of my homepage's flipTech page at
* http://members.visi.net/~flipino/progs.html
There, you will also find a design history and other pertinent
information.
[3.4 > Cost]
As it stands, this program is completely freeware, however monetary
donations will be appreciated as programming does cut greatly into
my scholastic and social life, and money would be a great means of
retribution and making this all worth it. Please send any donations
(US monetary only) to
* Gary Calpo
1328 Paramore Drive
Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA 23454
Donation benefits include the direct eMailing of future updates and
fixes, so don't forget to enclose your eMail address.
[4.1 > Credits]
Thanks go to all the people are using this program and publishing
it all over the world. I did a UltraSeek using Infoseek's services
and found over a dozen sites all over the world linked back to my
homepage and SwapMon. Keep the mail and eMail coming :)
[4.2 > In Closing]
I didn't think my utility would be taken this well, and I just want
to say a big, emphatic "THANKS!" to everyone who's taken the time to
write me. I hope this utility is of great use to you and that you
will distribute this program wherever you please (including popular
shareware archives and the like).
Happy monitoring!
